How the iPhone changed the telecommunications industry

How the iPhone changed the telecommunications industry   Before the first iPhone went on sale, Apple had gotten good at building computers and making iPods. But in the early 2000s, engineers at Apple had started working on something entirely new — a mobile device that combined a phone, an iPod and a computer. Everything about the iPhone was Apple’s: the phone itself, the design, the operating system. The only thing Apple needed was a network that allowed users to talk, text and browse the Internet. Enter AT&T's mobile services company, formerly known as Cingular Wireless. Apple and the wireless carrier struck a deal before the iPhone was first announced at the Macworld Conference in January 2007. The company would be the iPhone’s exclusive carrier. But the agreement was a risk. The carrier was concerned about becoming a dumb pipe, or a mere conduit for a data and minutes, instead of company that could also provide services and applications on top of its...

Now, 'Find Wi-Fi' anywhere in the world

Now, 'Find Wi-Fi' anywhere in the world    Facebook has expanded its "Find Wi-Fi" feature globally on both iOS and Android devices for its two billion users. The social networking giant had begun testing a "Find Wi-Fi" option last year on mobile only for iOS users in select countries. "We're beginning to roll out 'Find Wi-Fi' everywhere in the world on iPhone and Android. We launched it in a handful of countries last year and found it's not only helpful for people who are travelling or on-the-go, but especially useful in areas where cellular data is scarce," Alex Himel, Engineering Director at Facebook, wrote in a blog post late Friday. "'Find Wi-Fi' helps users locate available Wi-Fi hot spots nearby that businesses have shared with Facebook from their Page. "So wherever you are, you can easily map the closest connections when your data connection is weak," the post added. To find Wi-Fi hots...

Dead Indian guru will remain in freezer

Dead Indian guru will remain in freezer      An Indian court has granted permission for the followers of a long-dead spiritual guru to preserve his body in a freezer. Ashutosh Maharaj, founder of the sect "Divya Jyoti Jagriti Sansthan" (Divine Light Awakening Mission), died of a suspected heart attack in January 2014. But his followers insist he is only meditating deeply, and will one day return to life. They have kept his body in a commercial freezer at his vast ashram in Punjab. The judgement by Punjab and Haryana High Court ends a three-year-old dispute between the guru's disciples and Dalip Kumar Jha, who claims to be his son. Mr Jha had sought permission to cremate the guru's body, in line with Hindu rituals. In rejecting his plea, the court set aside a 2014 judgement that had ordered the guru's cremation after doctors confirmed him clinically dead. Mr Jha's lawyer told AFP it was unclear whether the court had agreed wit...
